2006-02-02: Secure Archival with Standard Hardware
Siegen. On occasion of the CeBIT the storage specialist PoINT Software & Systems GmbH brings along PoINT Archiver to Hanover, a software solution for automated and secure archival. This will enable companies to not only archive cost effectively but also to strengthen the reliability in terms of compliance of their data storage and the authenticity of their documents.
Controlled by configurable filters, PoINT Archiver monitors any network directory and specifically stores data on optical media. Within this process, media (CDs, DVDs, BDs) are automatically written and printed in the production system. A database administers the accompanying information, so that e.g. the research for a certain file version points directly at the corresponding archive medium.
Basing on additional information on the media, PoINT Archiver checks whether media or files have been manipulated. Therefore, a “digital fingerprint” is encrypted in a hidden area on the media and archived in the database. This way, media can be checked for their consistency and compared to entries in the database. Furthermore, you will be able to identify deleted or modified documents as well as compare documents from the original database to those in the archive.
Additionally, the optional encrypting mechanism prevents archived data against outside access. Furthermore, the combination of system key and different archive keys ensures, that a medium outside a PoINT Archiver installation cannot be accessed by unauthorized persons. This way, PoINT combines the advantages of removable media with the safety characteristics of closed systems.
The straightforward operation of PoINT Archiver is stressed by presenting the archive structure along the lines of the Windows Explorer. Relevant file information as well as the names of the corresponding archive media are shown for every archived version. All necessary media are listed in case of file, directory or archive retrieval. The requested data are copied fully automatically to the target directory.
