System Requirements ---------------------- 1.1 This version of PoINT FSX has been successfully tested on the following Linux Distributions: - SuSE 9.2, 9.3, SLES 9 1.2 The operating system requirements must be met and additionally the following requirements: - additional 64 MB and furthermore 20 MB per drive - Hard disk space under /var/cache for data cache and directory cache as configured in the the confiuration file /etc/PoINT/conf/fsx.conf. Default sizes are 500 MB for directory cache and 500 MB for data cache. The data cache must be configured to be larger than 100 MB plus twice the size of the largest file to be stored on optical media. For details please see the description in the manual. - The SCSI adapters connected to hard disks and optical drives shall be PCI bus-master adapters. This version has been tested with Adaptec and LSILOGIC Ultra and Ultra160 adapters. - SCSI hard disks shall not be connected to the same SCSI bus as recorder drives. - To ensure best reliability of the SCSI subsystem we recommend to connect recorder drives (CD-R, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, MO, UDO, PDD) and other devices (CD/DVD reader drives, jukebox robotic) to separate SCSI buses. 1.3 The SAMBA package is required to support Windows clients which have no NFS client software installed. 2. Installation --------------- 2.1 Log in as Superuser (root) and change to the directory that contains the FSX distribution, e.g. /media/dvd if you inserted an installation disc. The exact location depends on your Linux distribution. 2.2 Call './fsx_install' to install PoINT FSX. 2.3 Every program of the PoINT FSX suite uses the environment variables listed below. Note that the value of the variables must be set exactly as specified. The installation script fsx_install adds the environment variable definitions under /etc/profiles.d. PNTSYNCDIR = /usr/local/PoINT/tmp/ PNTDIR = /usr/local/PoINT/lib/ PNTJADIR = /etc/PoINT/conf/ After you installed fsx and before using it, logout and login again. This activates the environment variables added during installation. 2.4 To add the PoINT FSX manual pages to the search path for man program, the installation script fsx_install adds /usr/local/PoINT/man to the file /etc/man.config or /etc/manpath.config, respectively. If you prefer to set them on your own, add the path /usr/local/PoINT/man to the environment variable MANPATH. 2.5 See the document 'PoINT_FSX.PDF' under /usr/local/PoINT/doc to get information on how to startup PoINT FSX. 2.6 FSX requires a 'License Key' to enable the functionality. Please contact your dealer under reference to Serial Number and Product Key (displayed by command "fsx_license"). 3. Deinstallation ----------------- Stop PoINT FSX, then call './fsx_deinstall' to deinstall PoINT FSX. 4. If your device is not in the list, refer to the information provided at www.pointsoft.de or contact PoINT Software & Systems. 5. ATAPI CD/DVD Drive Configuration ----------------------------------- To configure ATAPI Single Drives for use with PoINT FSX follow the steps listed below: - to deinstall the module ide-cd, run this on the command line: modprobe -r sr_mod ide_cd ide-cd cdrom ide_scsi ide-scsi sg ide-cd cdrom - to install the module ide-scsi, run this on the command line: modprobe ide-scsi We recommend to configure the modules to be loaded automatically. Please note that the module names for SCSI access to ATAPI drives vary. Depending on your Linux kernel and distribution, they may look different. 6. PDD Support -------------- - The current implementation does not consider the limited write repeatability of re-writable media. 7. UDF Support -------------- PoINT FSX supports read operations on any media that are formatted according any UDF standard version from UDF 1.02 to UDF 2.01. PoINT FSX writes DVD-RAM, MO, UDO and PDD rewritable media according to the UDF 1.02 standard. PoINT FSX writes write-once media (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, MO-WORM, UDO-WO, PDD-WO) according to the UDF 1.50 standard for sequentially writable media. In addition, CD-RW and DVD-RW media can be erased. 7.1. Error Recovery After a write failure to a UDF volume, the volume will be marked as read only. Further read requests to the volume will be accepted, but write requests will be rejected. To repair the volume, execute the command "fsx_scan" with the option "--rescan" for that slot and medium side 7.2 Data Verification Because CD/DVD-R drives do not support verification for written data, FSX performs data verification by default to increase data security. This means data which have been written to optical disc, will be read back and compared with the original data. This option can be disabled in the FSX configuration file /etc/PoINT/conf/fsx.conf. 7.3 DVD-R Speed Limited to 2x Due to current reliability problems with 4/8X incremental recording speed on DVD-R, mostly in combination with bad or scratched DVD-R media, the speed for incremental recording will automatically be reduced to 2X speed. You can change this in the configuration file /etc/PoINT/conf/fsx.conf Please note that recording speeds higher than 2x could increase the possibilty of write errors and corrupted DVD-R media. For best recording performance please ensure that only certified DVD-R media with scratch free surfaces are used. 8. Limitations -------------- Currently, some features of FSX are limited: The maxium size for the directory cache ist 800 MB, which limits the amount of cached directory entries to about 4 million files. The total number of single drives and jukeboxes is limited to 16. Each of these jukeboxes may contain up to 16 drives. FSX does not support the protocol TCP. Clients must use the mount option "proto=udp". File names must be shorter than 128 Byte. Only one at a time will be used for format, scan or flush operations. Volumes in volume sets will always be scanned completely, regardless which value is assigned to the parameter "scan_depth". Volume sets do not support re-writable media. Volume sets do not support file spanning. Files in volume sets cannot be deleted or modified. 9. Known Problems ----------------- 9.1 Hardware Problems - PIONEER DVD-ROM D-7563 If multiple of these drives are connected to the same SCSI bus, you may experience SCSI timeout failures. This problem has been observed with firmware revision 1.04. To workaround this problem, the drives must be connected to a separate SCSI bus, e.g. one bus for the changer, one bus for the DVD-R drives and one bus for the DVD-ROM drives. Additionally, the option "Enable Disconnection" must be disabled for all DVD-ROM drives in the SCSI BIOS. 9.2 Software Problems The current version of PoINT FSX contains a few known software problems: Problem: The volume set write cache is not protected against overflow. Thus you can write more data into the volume set than can be flushed to physical media. The remaining data will stay on hard disk until more optical discs are added to the volume set. Solution: Currently no workaround available. Problem: Unter SuSE Linux 9.3, the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) conflicts with PoINT FSX when accessing DVD recorders. This causes access to DVD recorders through PoINT FSX to fail. Solution: Prevent HAL access to DVD recorders in one of these ways: 1. If the command "chkconfig hal" does not tell that hal is "on", the HAL damon is not running anyway, and there is nothing to do. 2. If "chkconfig hal" tells you that chkconfig is "on", you can disable it permanently: "chkconfig -d hal". 3. If you do not want to disable the HAL daemon permanently, you can stop it upon start of PoINT FSX by adding the command "rchal stop" to the begin of the script /usr/local/PoINT/bin/fsx. 4. You can configure the HAL to ignore a specific set of drives. Please refer to the HAL documentation for details. Problem: The command line tool "fsx_record" fails. fsx_record is used to record complete discs at once, as opposed to discs that are written incrementally through the file system presented by PoINT FSX. Solution: Currently no workaround available. Problem: In some configurations, the init script of PoINT FSX will not mount the file system presented by PoINT FSX to /mnt/fsx. Solution: Ensure that the environment variable HOSTNAME is equal to the hostname specified in the PoINT FSX exports file under under /etc/PoINT/conf/exports at the time PoINT FSX startup script is called. To do this, set the parameter HOSTNAME in the configuration file /etc/sysconfig/network to the same name specified in /etc/PoINT/conf/exports. 10.
