2006-06-26: PoINT Archiver Allows Secure Archival with Standard Hardware
Siegen. The recently launched PoINT Archiver allows companies to store their data automatically, safely and cost-effectively on optical media. Therefore, the software solution monitors any network directory in periodical intervals. By openly configurable filters the user defines, which file types shall be copied or migrated to an archive. In this process, PoINT Archiver stores additional file and media information in an encrypted way as “digital fingerprint” to be able to identify possible manipulations. PoINT Archiver supports optical media (CD, DVD and BD) and it can virtually be applied together with all major operating systems due to standardized Universal Disk Format (UDF).
PoINT Archiver is responsible for four major features - on the one hand for automatic archival and retrieval of data and on the other hand for authentication and control of data integrity and safety.
Defining Configurable Filters Identifying Those Files Which are to be Stored
The user defines by filters, which file type (e.g. office files) shall be stored in the running mode and which not (e.g. programme files). According to this parameter, PoINT Archiver searches the network directories and copies or migrates the relevant files on optical media in periodical intervals. The storage media (CDs, DVDs, BDs) will automatically be written and labelled, a database administers the accompanying information.
As regards the search for archived data, PoINT Archiver generates a list of media to be imported into the drives. Afterwards, the requested files and directories will be copied automatically into the target directory. The presentation of the archive structure is similarly to the view of Windows Explorer.
Revealing Manipulations of Files or Storage Media
Additionally, PoINT Archiver controls, whether the storage media or files have been manipulated: A “digital fingerprint” – archived on each medium and extra in the database – reveals the integrity of the data allowing identification of deleted or amended documents. An optional encrypting mechanism protects the archived data against outside access. A combination of system key and different archive keys ensures that a storage medium is not accessible for unauthorized persons outside a PoINT Archiver installation.
All in all, PoINT Archiver assures best possible protection of investment for business storage solutions. The universal file system and the possibility of implementing various operating systems turn PoINT Archiver into an essential tool for audit safe and cost effective archival with optical media.
