File-based archiving with removable media

Technical facts and latest reports are casting doubts on hard disk being the universal storage medium. This causes re-thinking as to long-term archiving in many fields, be it regarding business critical data or even private digital photography. In case data is to be archived over a long period of time, an additional protection of the rotating magnetic memory on reliable secondary storage media will be necessary. Especially removable media like magnetic tapes or optical media are recommendable as complementing technologies, not least due to their low energy consumption per TB.
